# Check your website before you publish

> Go through each page on a computer, tablet or phone, and signed in, to see your website the way visitors will before you publish.

The preview shows your newest saved version as visitors will see it once you [publish](/build/publish). Until then, they see only what you’ve published.

**1. Open your website**

On the **Build** board, press **Edit** under it. On a phone, the controls sit in a bar at the bottom: **Back**, **Chat**, **More actions** and **Publish**.

**2. Go through each page**

Press the page name at the top, like **Homepage**, then pick a page from **Pages**. On a phone, press **More actions**, then **Page**. Or type a page’s name, or the end of its address like `/menu`, in **Find page or enter path**.

**3. Check it on a phone**

Press the device button, left of the page name. Each press moves to the next size: desktop, tablet, then phone. The size stays with that website while you work.

![The top of the preview: the clock, ⋮, the device button outlined, then Refresh preview, the page name Homepage and Open in new tab.](https://mintcdn.com/foundable/kXUCZmsE466bfQJ0/images/website/build-preview-open.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=kXUCZmsE466bfQJ0\&q=85\&s=16e31fc96ece5a9006b6f389302aa025)

A website Ted made for phones opens on the phone screen. On a small window, a desktop page shrinks to fit instead of rearranging. On a phone-size screen, the device button doesn’t show.

**4. See how a page looks when shared**

In **Pages**, hover over a page’s **Social & search** icon, or press it on a phone. It shows how the page looks when shared or found in a search, and whether it lacks a title or social image. **Ask Ted to edit** adds a request to your message, and nothing changes until you send it.

**5. See it signed in**

If people can sign in to your website, open ⋮ (**Website actions**), or **More actions** on a phone, then **Viewing as**. It starts on **Signed out**, as visitors see it. Switch to **Signed in as you**, or to a test user: a made-up account for testing. **Add test user** makes one and signs the preview in as them. Only the owner and admins can do this.

Build remembers your choice in **Viewing as** for each website, in this browser. Press your website’s Google sign-in button in the preview, and Build offers to sign you in as yourself: press **Sign in as me** or **Stay signed out**.

At the top, **Refresh preview** reloads the page, the website’s name switches websites, and **Back** returns to the board. ⋮ also holds **Open full screen**, and **Tools** holds [Payments and more](/build/tools). In a narrow window, controls that don’t fit move into **More actions**.

## Check that it worked

The page name at the top shows the page you’re on, and the first row under ⋮ shows whom you’re viewing as.

## If something goes wrong

> **“Preview paused while Ted builds. It will reload when ready.”**
>
> Ted is changing your website. Wait: the preview reloads by itself.

> **“Starting your server…”**
>
> While you work on your website, like after you message Ted or press **Edit text**, it runs on its own server: the live preview. Opening Build alone never starts it. Wait: the preview reloads once it’s ready.

> **“Loading preview…”**
>
> The page is opening: wait a moment. If it takes a while, the preview says it’s still loading.

For a preview that won’t load, see [Preview and change your website](/build/preview-and-edit#if-something-goes-wrong).

## FAQ

> **Can other people see my preview?**
>
> Visitors can’t, but your team can, in Build. **Open in new tab** opens the preview at its own address, which anyone you give it to can view. See [Publish your website](/build/publish).
