# Change your DNS records

> Add or change your domain’s DNS records to point it at other services, like a shop or Google’s site check.

A domain you buy through Foundable uses Foundable’s [DNS](/help/glossary#dns). Its [DNS records](/help/glossary#dns-record) are lines that say where each part of it points. Add one when a shop, a calendar or Google’s site check asks for it.

If you’re the owner or an admin, Ted can do this for you: ask him to add or change a record.

Doing it yourself works for a domain you bought, in a foundable you own. A domain you connected keeps its records at your domain company.

**1. Open the domain**

Open the account menu (your initial or photo at the top right), choose **Settings**, then **All domains**. On a phone, press **More**, then **Settings**. Press the domain.

**2. Press Add record**

Under **DNS records**, press **Add record**.

**3. Fill it in**

Copy in the **Type**, **Host**, **Value** and **TTL** the service gives you. MX and SRV records also need a **Priority**. The types are A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV and NS.

**4. Save it**

Press **Save**.

To change or delete one of your records, open its ⋮ menu. Deleting asks you first.

Records with a lock are Foundable’s, like the ones your website and your email need. Point at a lock to see why it’s there.

## Use another DNS company

[Nameservers](/help/glossary#nameserver) decide which company runs a domain’s DNS. The **Nameservers** card shows **Foundable** or **Custom**, and the ones in use. Keep Foundable unless you want another company to run it.

To switch, press **Edit** on the card. Enter the ones that company gives you, using **Add nameserver** for more. Then press **Save nameservers**.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Foundable then stops managing the domain’s DNS. If your website uses it, Foundable asks once more. Your website and any email on it stop working until you reset to Foundable. Press **Change anyway** only if that’s what you want.

While they’re custom, the domain says so, and you can’t change its records here. Press **Reset** on the card, or **Reset to Foundable** in the dialog, to bring them back.

## Check that it worked

Your record shows in the list once Foundable saves it. New nameservers show on their card. If that change stops partway, the domain says it needs a fix. The card says why, with **Try again** where it can help.

## If something goes wrong

> **“Foundable uses @ and www for your site, so they can’t take an A, AAAA, CNAME or NS record.”**
>
> Your website uses those two hosts. Give this record a different host.

> **“DNS records aren’t managed here”**
>
> Its nameservers point to another company, so its records live there. Change them there, or press **Reset to Foundable** to manage them here again.

> **“The registry refused the nameservers you entered. Check them with your DNS provider, then edit them again.”**
>
> Your nameservers stay as they were. Check the new ones with the other company, then press **Edit** and enter them again.

## FAQ

> **Do I need to add records for my website?**
>
> No. Foundable points a domain you buy at your website, and keeps those records for you. See [Buy a domain](/domains/buy-a-domain).

> **Can I change the records for email on my domain?**
>
> Not on a domain you bought: Foundable keeps those too. To change your email address, use the Inbox. See [Change your email name or address](/inbox/email-address).
