# Tips for asking Ted

> How to ask Ted for what you want: say the result you’re after, give him the details only you know, show him examples and check his work.

You don’t need special words or commands to work with Ted. Talk to him the way you’d talk to a new employee who’s good at his job. Say what you want, and why it matters to your business.

These habits help Ted get it right sooner. Each one comes with messages you can copy and change.

## Say the result you want

Describe what you want to end up with, not how to get there. Ted works out the steps.

```text wrap theme={null}
Add our opening hours to the homepage: Monday to Friday, 7 am to 4 pm, and Saturday, 8 am to noon.
```

```text wrap theme={null}
Make the homepage feel warmer and more welcoming, like a neighborhood bakery.
```

If you’re not sure where to start, open a new chat. It asks “What should I work on?” and offers a few ideas, like “Improve my homepage” or “Find my first customers”. Pressing one puts its words in the box for you to change and send.

## Give him the details only you know

Ted can look a lot up on the web, but some things only you know. Tell him what you sell and for how much, your hours and where you are. Tell him who your customers are, and what makes you different.

```text wrap theme={null}
We sell sourdough, bagels and coffee. Most of our customers are parents on the school run between 7 and 9 am. Write a homepage headline for them.
```

The more specific you are, the less Ted has to guess:

| Instead of | Try |
| - | - |
| “Make my website better.” | “Make the homepage friendlier for parents: bigger photos of our cakes, and an Order button near the top.” |
| “Write a post.” | “Write an Instagram post about our new pumpkin bread, out this Saturday. Keep it warm and short.” |
| “Email that café.” | “Email the café on Main Street. Ask if they’d stock our sourdough on weekends, and offer them a free tasting.” |
| “Find customers.” | “Find cafés near downtown that could sell our pastries.” |

Social posts need a paid plan.

## Show him what you mean

* **Add a photo or a file.** A picture of your menu, your logo or a price list says more than a long message. Press **+**, then **Add photos & files**.
* **Point at the part to change.** In Build’s preview, press **Select** and click a part of your website, then tell Ted what to change. See [Preview and change your website](/build/preview-and-edit).
* **Give him a look to follow.** In Build, **References** has example websites to base your next new website on. You can also upload your own pictures there to guide your next message. See [Build your website](/build/overview#references).

```text wrap theme={null}
Here’s a photo of our menu board. Put these drinks and prices on the menu page.
```

## Let him ask you first

For bigger jobs, ask Ted to check with you before he starts:

```text wrap theme={null}
I want to start selling catering trays. Ask me what you need to know before you begin.
```

His questions come on a card, one at a time, like “1 of 3”, with his suggestion marked “Recommended”. Pick an answer, or write your own.

## Keep the conversation going

* **Add to it while he works.** Thought of something else? Send it. Ted reads it at his next step and keeps what he’s done.
* **Answer cards in your own words.** In your next message, reply to a card with “yes”, “no” or “the second one”.
* **Pick up from what he made.** Press **Talk to Ted** on a document, draft or website he made, and he picks it up in the chat.
* **Use his suggestions.** After he builds or changes something, his next steps show as buttons above the box. Pressing one only fills the box, so you can change it first.

## Start a new chat for a new topic

Keep one topic to a chat, like your website in one and your newsletter plans in another. Press **New chat** to start one. A new chat doesn’t start Ted from scratch: he keeps his notes, and he can look back through your earlier chats.

If a chat grows very long, Ted may say “This message and its conversation are too large to read together. Send a shorter message or start a new chat.” Start a new chat, and tell him in a line what you were working on.

## When Ted gets it wrong

<Steps>
  <Step title="Say what’s wrong">
    Be plain and specific: “The contact page says we close at 5 on Fridays. We close at 3.”
  </Step>

  <Step title="Take a change back">
    Press **Undo latest edit** under his reply, or **Revert to this version** on an older one. Every saved version is in [Version history](/build/version-history).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Ask again another way">
    Use **Edit message** on your own message to rewrite it. Your website goes back to how it was before that message, and Ted answers the new words.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Still stuck?">
    Choose **Report a problem** in the reply’s **…** menu, or press **Support** at the top right. See [Get help](/help/get-help).
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  Never paste a password or a secret key into a message. When Ted needs a key for your website, he asks for it on a card of its own, “Secrets Ted asked for”.
