# Talk and plan with Ted for free

> Switch Ted’s message box to Chat to talk and plan with him for free, then have him do the work in Work when you’re ready.

Ted’s message box has two modes. In **Work**, Ted does the work and uses [credits](https://docs.foundable.com/help/glossary.md#credit). In **Chat**, he talks and plans with you for free, on every plan.

**1. Open the mode menu**

In Ted’s message box, press **Work**, next to the microphone. This button always shows the mode the box sends in.

**2. Choose Chat**

Choose **Chat**, marked **Free**.

**3. Talk it through**

Send your message as usual. Ted answers questions, gives advice and plans with you. He writes what you need in his reply, like a post, an email or the words for a page. He also reads the photos and files you add.

**4. Have him do the work**

When you ask for work, like a change to your website, Ted says what he’d do and shows **Do this in Work**. Press it, and he starts the work, using credits. Or switch the box back to **Work** and ask again.

## What Ted does in Chat

In Chat, Ted makes and sends nothing. He doesn’t build or change your website, post, send emails, make pictures, search the web or change your settings.

Chat and Work share one conversation. When Ted works, he knows what you planned in Chat, and back in Chat, he knows the work he did.

## Check that it worked

The button next to the microphone reads **Chat**. After you press **Do this in Work**, the chat says you switched to Work, and Ted’s steps appear as he works.

## If something goes wrong

> **“Ted keeps chatting for free.”**
>
> Your credits ran out, so the box switched to **Chat** by itself. To have Ted work again, press the button beside the note, like **Upgrade**. Pressing **Work** or **Do this in Work** opens the same. See [Get more credits when you run out](https://docs.foundable.com/account/out-of-credits.md).

> **Ted says he can’t do that in Chat**
>
> Chat is for talking and planning. Press **Do this in Work** under his reply, or switch the box to **Work** and send your request again.

## FAQ

> **Does Chat use credits?**
>
> No. Chat is free on every plan, Free included. Work uses credits, which **Do this in Work** reminds you of. See [Track your credits and spending](https://docs.foundable.com/account/plans-and-credits.md).

> **Does the box stay in Chat?**
>
> Only while this chat is open. Another chat, or reloading the page, starts in **Work**. While you’re out of credits, the box stays in **Chat** until you have credits again.

> **Do my texts to Ted use Chat?**
>
> Only when you’re out of credits. Then Ted answers your texts in Chat until you have credits again. See [Text Ted from your phone](https://docs.foundable.com/ted/text-ted.md).
